Florida joins other states across the country to observe National School Bus Safety Week on Oct. 18-22, 2010. The special week commemorates the safe service that school buses provide to families, as they provide one of the safest modes of transportation for children.

First Student Transportation Company is offering a free to highlight School Bus Safety. Contact Cherrie Beardsley if you would like a free program for you PTA or School.

Each year, Florida drivers illegally pass school buses nearly two million times. Each illegal pass-by could result in a tragic injury or fatality of a student. The inconvenience of an extra few seconds spent waiting for a stopped school bus is insignificant compared to the loss of a child’s life, which is why Florida’s departments of Education, Transportation, and Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, have teamed up to develop the Stop on Red, Kids Ahead campaign to remind drivers of the laws and safe practices to take when approaching a school bus.

Tax Help for PTAs – IRS Form 990

Need 990 Help? Don’t have a computer or internet access? Large or small, PTAs must file some version of Form 990 with the IRS EACH YEAR to comply with Federal Regulations. These special sessions are for those who have not filed the 2009 tax return. Participants will be able to produce and review a 990.

SIGN UP for a one hr session between 10:30am to 1:30 pm at the DCCPTA meeting on Tues Sept 21st.

We are encouraging you, the student, to write an essay about how someone who took the time to “be there” for you. Write 300 words or less describing a time when an adult (parent, family member, teacher, older friend, etc.) helped, inspired, or motivated you, whether they took the time to be there for you just once or many times. We want to know how they made a difference in your life just by stopping what they were doing, avoiding distractions and focusing on you; taking the time to “be there” for you.

Turn in only one final copy. Essays may be typed on a computer or handwritten, front side of the paper only, please. Make sure to include your name, grade, school and teacher’s name on the bottom of the last page. Staple all pages together at top left corner.

Essays will be judged based on content and relation to the topic and will not be penalized for grammar or spelling errors. Each school Principal will be responsible for submitting one or two essays representing their school.

Final deadline to submit essays to the DCC PTA Board for judging is Monday March 8th @ 5pm.
