A Century of Showing Up

Dear PTA friends,

Is it really only the eighth week of school? Somehow, my calendar says October, but my coffee cup says April. Between school events, fall activities, and PTA plans, I know many of you are running on commitment, caffeine, and whatever snacks were left over from the last event.

And still, you show up. That is what makes our 100-year legacy so meaningful. It was built by parents, teachers, and community members who made time to welcome a new family, ask a hard question, or speak up for a child. I see that same heart in our local units today.

To our local unit leaders and volunteers: I see how hard you’re working, and I am so grateful. You’ve been welcoming families, growing membership, planning events, supporting school staff, and answering the “just one quick question” that is rarely quick. Behind every successful event are emails, supply runs, rearranged schedules, and people carrying things back to their cars long after everyone else has gone home. Whether your PTA is finding its footing or continuing a strong tradition, your effort matters. Please know that the care you put into your school community is seen and appreciated.

As Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15, I’m also thinking about what it means to feel that you belong. I’m proud of my Bolivian and Uruguayan roots, and I want families of every background to know their voices matter in PTA. An invitation is a start; listening and making room for people to lead is how we follow through.

That spirit matters as we approach the November 3 election. Duval voters will decide whether to continue the current one-mill school funding for four more years. These funds support teachers and staff, school safety, academics, arts, athletics, and student activities. I support its continuation, and I hope you’ll learn about the measure, talk with other families, and remind them to vote on November 3. Advocacy is how we turn our care for students into action.

Thank you for showing up, especially on the days when your calendar looks like it needs a permission slip of its own. Our first century was built one act of service at a time. Together, we’re writing the next chapter.
